Timely news for Bruins heading into Round Two

27Apr10

The Boston Bruins have received some long-awaited good news on the injury front.

Following a two-month absence with post-concussion syndrome after a Matt Cooke hit, centre Marc Savard, the Beantown Bears’ best offensive weapon has been cleared to return to game action.

As reported by Sportsnet.ca, Savard, out since March 7, was cleared by an independent doctor to return to play. He had 33 points in 41 regular season games this season.

While this is great news for the NHL’s second-lowest scoring team in the regular season, it serves them more if they play Pittsburgh in the next round, than the possible matchup with Philadelphia. Should Montreal defeat Washington in Game 7 of their series Wednesday night, the Bruins would find themselves squaring off with the Flyers in what would be sure to be a vicious physical series. Not exactly the kind of hockey Savard is cut out for, especially after such a long period without game action.

However, should Washington beat Montreal, Boston will face the defending champion Penguins in Round Two. In this case, the Bruins will need all the firepower they can muster against Pittsburgh’s high-octane offence.

Getting a key player back in between series can be a huge lift for a team. For the Bruins, having endured a physical and close-scoring series with Buffalo, a few days rest, combined with the return of their best forward is good news indeed.

They just better hope they don’t face the Flyers next. If they do, Savard might end up back in the press box all over again, courtesy of one of Philly’s bruising forwards.

You have to love playoff hockey; there are so many storylines.
